I would take a quick moment to thank everyone who helped out after RJ's (#41) crash. I'm glad everyone else's kart made it through unharmed, and RJ's injury was minor. He came through it with a minor bump on his leg, and wanted to run some more. Unfortunately the kart was not immediately repairable.
He was following another kart too closely, and spun when he had to brake to avoid another driver. Of course the pack was right on top of him also, and they had nowhere to go. These things happen.
On a bright note, we reviewed some of today's video and he was pointing out his own mistakes, and how he is planning to fix them. He learned a lot today, and is looking forward to coming back to trounce a particular "Monte-Carlo" (his words not mine, all said with a big grin).
Hope everyone had fun, we certainly did.

Hey Rusty, this is Nate's dad, Tim. Glad to hear RJ is OK.

Appreciate your input to Nate's questions. Regarding the lower steering block, I agree totally that some work there would help. Rather than a new block, I hope to have that one bored out to accept a sintered metal (Oilite) bearing. If I'm not able to do that through work connections, I may check to see if Rich can help as he probably has a mill. Up at the splined end, I may have a quick solution, but yes, a small cross bolt should work fine. For tire pressure issues, I think I'll replace the aging stems and remount tires as you suggested to start. Two questions; 1)Is there any reason to not use a tube, and 2)Do wheels this size need to be balanced?

It's been hectic getting things (primarily the transportation piece) ready and I didn't get much chance to look at the kart in detail after we got it home from rookie school. Now we're seeing things that I'd like to improve, so we'll start tackling them one at a time. Despite the minor issues, I feel Nate has a great opportunity to grow in this sport in many ways. Most of this is because of the people involved, including you and your family. In just a week's time, so many have reached out to welcome us and to offer help in many ways. I'm sure he'll find the sport to be a challenge, but I can't think of a better environment for him to be in right now. We're looking forward to this year.

Thanks again for all your help and input,
Tim

Tim,
I have kart tire mounting equipment, and extra stems if you want to wander out to West Henrietta after work one day. I'm about 5 minutes from the Henrietta exit on 90. Some balance them, most don't. I haven't noticed an issue at 60MPH on the TAG (unbalanced). As far as using a tube, the tires are meant to flex a certain way in the corners, and I don't know how the extra layer of rubber would impact this. I would clean up the rims, replace the stems (although you should be fine replacing just the cores), re-mount the tires, and see how it goes. We can also go though your tires, and some of our old tires and check the durometer. Try to get you the softest ones in the bunch.
