Best Go Kart Chain (2026): #35, #40, #41 & #420 Compared

Grayscale photo of bicycle derailleur — Best Go Kart Chain

The best go kart chain is the one whose size matches both your clutch and your axle sprocket, so this guide starts with chain size (#35, #40, #41 and #420) and then compares length, master links and tools. It is written for yard-kart owners replacing a stretched or snapped chain, DIY builders setting up a Predator 212 drivetrain, and minibike owners who share the same parts. Our #1 pick is the Belleone #35 10 ft chain, because it is long enough for any kart layout with spare left over and arrives with a chain breaker and five master links.

Belleone #35 roller chain — 10 ft, 320 links, 40Mn carbon steel, breaker plus 5 master links.

The only 10 ft #35 chain that includes a breaker

Seven of the 11 chain-only listings are #35, the size most stock yard karts and minibikes with a #35 clutch use. Two of those seven come in 10 ft lengths, and this Belleone is the only one of the pair that adds a chain breaker and master links. The PGN 10 ft #35 ships with two spare links but no tool, which means buying a breaker separately before you can size it.

Ten feet is far more than a single kart needs, and that is the point. Most single-engine karts use somewhere between 3 and 5 ft of chain, so the remainder becomes a spare for a second kart or a replacement after the first one stretches. The five master links also mean you can rejoin a chain on the trail.

One detail to note: the listing prints the pitch as 0.35 in. Standard #35 chain has a 3/8 in (0.375 in) pitch, and the size label, roller width and pin diameter here are consistent with standard #35, so the figure reads as shorthand. Confirm your clutch and sprocket are #35 before ordering; the listing itself recommends checking.

Pros

  • Longest #35 chain with a breaker on the shelf
  • Five master links
  • Spare length for future repairs
  • Full roller and pin dimensions

Cons

  • Pitch figure printed as 0.35 in
  • No sprocket fitment info
  • More chain than one kart needs

Why we like it

  • Only listing that states a tensile strength
  • Also states a 10 hp maximum rating
  • Breaker and five clip master links included
  • Cut-to-fit from 132 links
Specification Details
Chain size #420
Length and links 132 links, shortened with the included breaker
Master links Yes, 5 clip-type master links
Strength rating 4000 lb tensile, 10 hp maximum
Material and finish Natural steel finish
Matching sprocket info For 420 sprockets; common on 50cc to 125cc machines

DYC RCKIT420132 — #420 chain, 132 links, 4000 lb tensile, 10 hp max, breaker and 5 master links.

The only listing with a strength and horsepower rating

None of the other 16 listings on the shelf put a number on chain strength. This DYC kit states a 4000 lb tensile rating and a 10 hp ceiling, which gives a modified-engine builder something concrete to compare against. A stock Predator 212 sits well under that horsepower figure; a heavily modified engine may not.

The #420 size is common on Chinese ATVs, pit bikes and karts built from their parts, and the listing names Coleman, Baja, SSR, TaoTao, Coolster and similar brands. It shares its 1/2 in pitch with #40 and #41, so it runs on sprockets cut for 40/41/420.

The listing does not state a length in inches. As a rule of thumb, 132 pitches of 1/2 in chain is about 66 in before cutting, but count your old chain rather than guessing.

Pros

  • Tensile and horsepower rating stated
  • Breaker and 5 master links
  • Cut-to-fit length
  • Wide vehicle fitment list

Cons

  • Length in inches not printed
  • Plain steel finish needs regular lube
  • Will not mesh with #35 sprockets

Why we like it

  • Longest #40 chain on the shelf
  • ANSI #40 single strand, 1/2 in pitch
  • Carbon steel stated clearly
  • Two connecting links included
Specification Details
Chain size #40 (ANSI, single strand)
Length and links 10 ft, 239 links
Master links 2 connecting links; no breaker
Material and finish Carbon steel
Pitch 1/2 in
Matching sprocket info Not stated in listing; use #40 or 40/41/420 sprockets

PGN #40 roller chain — 10 ft, 239 links, 1/2 in pitch, carbon steel, 2 connecting links.

Twice the length of the other #40 chain on the shelf

Two listings sell plain #40 chain. The AZSSMUK version is 5 ft with 120 links and one connecting link; this PGN chain is 10 ft with 239 links and two connecting links. If you run a larger kart with a long wheelbase, or a shop that maintains several karts, the longer roll is the more practical buy.

The #40 size is the heavy-duty end of the 1/2 in pitch family. It suits torque converter setups and higher-output engines where #35 is marginal. Because #40 rollers are wider than #41 and #420, check that your sprockets are either #40 or labelled 40/41/420.

No breaker is included, so budget for one if you do not already own a chain tool. The listing also does not mention a finish or corrosion coating.

Pros

  • Long 10 ft roll
  • Clear ANSI #40 sizing
  • Two connecting links

Cons

  • No chain breaker
  • No finish or coating stated
  • No sprocket fitment info

Why we like it

  • Only #35 listing that names specific kart models
  • Full pitch, roller and pin dimensions
  • Breaker plus five master links
  • 160 links is enough for most small karts
Specification Details
Chain size #35
Length and links 160 links (about 5 ft at 3/8 in pitch)
Master links Yes, 5 included, plus breaker
Material and finish High-strength carbon steel
Dimensions 3/8 in pitch, 0.2 in roller, 0.188 in inner width, 0.141 in pin
Matching fitment Coleman CK100, SK100, CT100U, CC100X; Baja Doodle Bug; Motovox; Mega Moto

LUPING LPCB03 — #35 chain, 160 links, 3/8 in pitch, carbon steel, breaker and 5 master links.

The only #35 listing that names kart and minibike models

The other six #35 listings describe fitment in general terms such as “go karts, mini bikes and scooters”. LUPING lists actual models, including the Coleman CK100 and SK100 go karts and several popular minibikes. If you own one of those, the guesswork drops considerably.

The listing also prints the full set of dimensions, the correct 3/8 in pitch, and states that the breaker works with Predator 79cc to 212cc engine setups. 160 links at 3/8 in pitch is roughly 60 in, which covers most small kart layouts with some to spare.

Pros

  • Named Coleman and Baja fitment
  • Complete dimension list
  • Breaker and 5 master links
  • Useful mid-length

Cons

  • Plain finish, no coating stated
  • Too short for some long-wheelbase karts
  • No strength rating

Clutch 3/4 in bore, 3/16 in key, 10 teeth, engages around 2300 rpm
Engine fit Predator 212 and 2 to 6.5 hp engines with a 3/4 in shaft
Also included Clutch bolt, washer kit, wrench

KRGUOD centrifugal clutch kit — 3/4 in bore, 10T, 40/41/420 chain (96 links), 2300 rpm engagement, 1-year warranty.

The only clutch-and-chain kit that states chain length

Three listings on the shelf pair a 3/4 in bore 10-tooth clutch with a 1/2 in pitch chain: TEANTECH, GYMMEDS and this KRGUOD kit. Only KRGUOD says how long the chain is, 96 links, and only KRGUOD states an engagement speed. Both details matter when planning a build: the link count tells you whether the chain will reach your axle sprocket, and the engagement speed tells you when the kart will start moving.

Buying clutch and chain together guarantees they match. Mixing a #35 clutch with #40 chain is one of the most common first-build mistakes. Remember that the axle sprocket also needs to be 40/41/420; see pick #7.

The listing does not state the chain material or finish, and 96 links (about 48 in) may be short on a longer kart, so measure first. For more on clutch selection, read our go kart clutch guide.

Pros

  • Clutch and chain guaranteed to match
  • Chain link count stated
  • Engagement rpm stated
  • Fitting hardware included

Cons

  • Chain material not stated
  • 96 links may be short for long karts
  • Only fits 3/4 in crankshafts

  • Breaker and spare master links included
  • Listing includes alignment advice
Specification Details
Chain size #35
Length and links 4 ft, 128 links
Master links Yes, extra master links plus breaker
Material and finish Automotive-grade alloy steel, red finish
Pitch 3/8 in
Matching sprocket info Not stated in listing; use #35 sprockets

CILOYU CO-CH35-128-01R — #35 chain, 4 ft, 128 links, alloy steel, red finish, breaker included.

The only 4 ft #35 chain on the shelf

The #35 chains on the shelf come in 3 ft, 4 ft, roughly 5 ft and 10 ft lengths. Three feet is short for many karts, and 5 or 10 ft leaves a lot of offcut. This 4 ft CILOYU sits in between and suits compact yard karts with a short engine-to-axle distance.

The listing is also honest about its limits: it warns that 128 links is not long enough for some minibikes without adding chain, and it reminds buyers to keep the sprockets aligned. Along with its 3 ft CILOYU sibling, it is one of only two #35 listings with a coloured (red) finish, which some owners prefer for looks.

Pros

  • Useful 4 ft length
  • Breaker and spare masters
  • Alloy steel with red finish
  • Clear length warning

Cons

  • Too short for longer karts
  • Finish durability not specified
  • No strength rating

Why we like it

  • Only sprocket here that mounts straight to an axle
  • 1 in bore with 1/4 in keyway
  • Two set screws pre-installed
  • Heat-treated steel, electroplated finish
Specification Details
Chain size #40, #41 and #420
Teeth and diameter 60 teeth, 9-3/4 in outside diameter
Bore and keyway 1 in bore, 1/4 in keyway; key not included
Material and finish Heat-treated medium carbon steel, electroplated
Stated fitment Select Yerf-Dog and Murray karts

Podoy 60T live axle sprocket — 40/41/420 chain, 1 in bore, 1/4 in keyway, 9-3/4 in OD, two set screws.

The only sprocket on the shelf with a keyed axle bore

Three sprockets appear on the shelf, all for 40/41/420 chain. The two Gekufa sprockets have large centre bores (2 in and 2-1/8 in) and bolt onto a hub; this Podoy sprocket has a 1 in keyed bore and set screws, so it fits directly onto a 1 in live axle. If your kart has no sprocket hub, this is the simpler install.

A 60-tooth rear sprocket with a 10-tooth clutch gives a 6:1 ratio, which favours acceleration and pulling power over top speed. The listing rightly notes that actual speed depends on the clutch sprocket, tyre size and engine. Add the 1/4 in key separately, since it is not in the box.

Pros

  • Direct 1 in live axle mount
  • Set screws pre-installed
  • Corrosion-resistant plating
  • Clear dimensions

Cons

  • Axle key not included
  • Large 9-3/4 in diameter needs ground clearance
  • Not for #35 chain

Go Kart Chain Sizes Explained: #35 vs #40, #41 and #420

Chain size is set by your clutch or torque converter and your axle sprocket, not by preference. Read the number stamped on your old chain’s side plates or the sprocket, or measure the pitch (the distance between pin centres). Our clutch chain guide covers matching in more depth.

  • #35: 3/8 in pitch. Light and common on stock yard karts, minibikes and many 79cc to 212cc builds with #35 clutches. Fine for stock engines; marginal for heavily modified ones.
  • #40: 1/2 in pitch with the widest rollers of the half-inch family. The heavy-duty choice for torque converters and higher-output engines.
  • #41: 1/2 in pitch with narrower, lighter rollers. Common on older karts and light-duty drives.
  • #420: 1/2 in pitch, motorcycle-style chain used on Chinese ATVs and pit bikes and many karts built from those parts.
  • #219: a small racing-kart chain on a 7.774 mm pitch, used with dedicated racing sprockets. It does not interchange with any of the sizes above, and none of the listings compared here are #219.

Sprockets sold as “40/41/420” are made thin enough to run all three half-inch chains. A sprocket cut specifically for #40 may be too thick for #41 or #420 chain, and no #35 part will mesh with a 1/2 in pitch chain. If you are planning a whole drivetrain, our go kart engine guide explains how engine output affects chain choice.

How to Measure Chain Length

The easiest method is to count your old chain. Lay it flat and count the pins (each pin is one pitch), or measure its length and divide by the pitch. Stretched chain will measure long, so count pins rather than trusting a tape.

Be careful with link counts on listings. Most sellers count pitches, but one #420 listing on the shelf counts inner and outer links separately, which halves the real figure. When in doubt, compare lengths in inches or feet.

For a new build, wrap a piece of string around both sprockets along the chain path with the engine at the middle of its adjustment slots, mark it, and divide by the pitch. Round up to the next whole pitch; with a standard master link the chain must have an even number of pitches. Leave room in the engine mount slots to tension the chain as it stretches.

Chain Tension and Alignment

A chain that is too tight wears bearings and the clutch and robs power; one that is too loose can jump the sprocket and lock the rear wheels. As a general guide, there should be roughly 1/4 to 1/2 in of free play at the middle of the lower run, checked at the tightest spot as you rotate the axle. Follow your kart or clutch maker’s figure if one is given.

The clutch sprocket and axle sprocket must sit in a straight line. Lay a straightedge across both faces; any offset causes the chain to ride up on the teeth and wear unevenly. Check engine mount bolts after setting tension, since they can slip.

Always fit a chain guard. A thrown chain moves fast, and loose clothing or long hair near an unguarded chain is a serious entanglement risk, especially on kids’ karts.

Lubrication and Maintenance

  • Lubricate with a chain-specific lube on the inside of the chain while it is warm, then wipe off the excess so it does not fling onto tyres or brake rotors.
  • Clean dirt and grit off after muddy or dusty runs; grit plus oil grinds the rollers.
  • Inspect for stiff links, cracked side plates and a loose master link clip. The open end of the clip should face away from the direction of travel.
  • Replace chain and sprockets together when teeth look hooked or the chain stretches past its adjustment range; a new chain on worn sprockets wears out quickly.

Chain work often goes hand in hand with other rear-end jobs; see our go kart axle guide and go kart brakes guide if you are pulling the axle anyway.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size chain does a go kart use?
Most yard karts use #35, #40, #41 or #420 chain. The correct size is set by your clutch or torque converter and axle sprocket, so read the number on the old chain or sprocket, or measure the pitch: 3/8 in is #35 and 1/2 in is the #40, #41 and #420 family.

Can #41 or #420 chain run on a #40 sprocket?
They share a 1/2 in pitch, but #41 and #420 have narrower inside widths. They will run on sprockets labelled 40/41/420; a sprocket cut specifically for #40 may be too thick for them.

How tight should a go kart chain be?
As a general guide, allow roughly 1/4 to 1/2 in of up-and-down play at the middle of the lower run, measured at the tightest point. Follow your kart or clutch maker figure where one exists.

How do you shorten a go kart chain?
Use a chain breaker to push out a pin at the length you need, then rejoin the ends with a master link. Several chains in this guide include a breaker and spare master links for this reason.

How often should a go kart chain be lubricated?
Lubricate after every few rides, after riding in wet or dusty conditions, and any time the chain looks dry. Wipe off excess lube so it does not reach the tyres or brakes.

Should the chain and sprockets be replaced together?
Yes, when the sprocket teeth look hooked or worn. A new chain on worn sprockets wears quickly and can skip, so replacing them together usually costs less over time.

Final Thoughts

Identify your chain size from the clutch and sprocket first, then pick a length and make sure a breaker and master links are in hand. For most #35 karts, the Belleone 10 ft chain covers today’s repair and the next one. Browse our go kart parts guide for the rest of the drivetrain.
